How we still save money and a lot of time without always clipping coupons and matching deals

A little bit about family: Anh Mark (my sweet husband) likes to refer our family as The Content Proverbs 31 Family (tcp31f) since we like to live frugally. What do we do with our savings? We truly believe we are very blessed with so much and if and when are able to we like to bless others who are in need and are less unfortunate. One of our goals is to live debt free and pay off our homes ASAP so the savings definitely do help with that.

We’re not a 100% natural family. We do try to make better choices when it comes to what we eat and put on our bodies. We buy organic products we believe in and as often as we can afford them. We’re big animal lovers and have five very sweet and beautiful fur kids so we support companies that are against animal testing.

I haven’t really been couponing much due to lack of time and exhaustion for a long time now. As most of you guys already know my sweet husband went to work far away for ten months and just returned this past June. I stayed at home to take care of our five months then son, our five fur kids and everything in the house.
I did clip and printed coupons when hubby wasn’t home but they always expired before I could use them. Every time I had a trip planned out I couldn’t always make it out to the stores. It was hard for me to get out of the house on most days. I also found that since we make a lot of our own products or replace them with a more natural alternative I don’t have to shop as much. There are also not a lot of coupons available for what we need…

So how did we still managed to save money without clipping coupons and matching weekly deals all the time?
Here are a few things we did and have been doing for over a year now and they work really well for our family, life style, schedule and our monthly budget. We still clip, print and use coupons here and there but saving money this way is just easier and less stressful and time consuming for our family. More time saved equals more time to do the things we love and to spend it with the ones we love.

Part One

SAVINGS for clothes, toys, books, household items:

#1. I don’t have a problem shopping at thrift stores or from online yard sales. I’ve been able to find a great deals on a Stoke Tripp Trapp high chair, City Select double stroller, Björn babysitter chair and some other good toys that will last more than a week on ebay.
Some of the purchases were won from auctions and that require a little time, strategy and patience. But in the end we paid way less than buying the items at the stores even with coupons and weekly/monthly promotions and their stores bucks.

#2. There are a few things that I’ll not buy at a thrift stores. But I’ve been very lucky to have found some really good learning and toys in GREAT condition for our son for such a low price. I also found some pretty new cloth napkins and kitchen towels to replace paper towels and napkins. Disposable wipes to me are also a waste of money so it only made sense to use cloth wipes with our cloth diapers. I still have to buy disposable wipes when they’re at our stock up price just for on the go purposes or emergencies.
This frugal tip has really saved us so much money Ways for us to cut back on using paper towels and lliving green makes me very happy.
Also check with your local thrift stores about their weekly or monthly promotions.

#3. Target and Kohl’s: stacking the weekly promotions with their coupons really will give you a huge discount on the products

We don’t like credit cards but we do have a Kohl’s store card just to stack up all the discounts if we ever need to purchase something from Kohl’s. It doesn’t hurt us at all to have one since we don’t carry a balance and there is no annual fee.

As mentioned here
Kohl’s is a great place to shop for our baby products! We bought a bunch of new clothes for baby boy with the 30% coupon, $10 off $30 purchase (we were able to combine two coupons), earned $10 for $50 spent, earned 6% cash back from ebates and received free shipping.

Check out this post for more ways to save on the products for your baby’s first years

Our Target debit gives us a 5% on EVERYTHING so that’s always awesome. Along with all the discounts Target offers read more about More Ways to Save at Target
we must not forget to stack all these discounts with Cartwheel, Saving Star and Ibotta offers whenever posible to get even more savings. What’s Ibotta? Read more here Ibotta and Saving Star are two more ways to save even more money without doing much.

#4. MYO products~
Our shopping list for household & personal items are not very long at all since we try to make everything ourselves or use a better healthier substitute for the product.

The MYO ( make your own) products are so easy to make and they really don’t take up a lot of time. I truly hope you’ll give them a try. Take a look around on this site for all the MYO/ DYI posts and join us over at our facebook page for more updates and money saving tips :)

✔ out these MYO products (listed below) that we make at home so we don’t have to buy and spend so much anymore. It’s a pretty awesome list and that’s a bunch of money and time saved each month not having to go to the stores for them.

•powdered laundry detergent

•powdered dish soap detergent

•all purpose cleaner

•stain remover

•glass & screen/electronic cleaner

•stainless steel cleaner

•air freshener (no more expensive plugins!) and air freshener spray

•toothpaste & coconut oil for oil pulling and mouthwash

•coconut oil for hair mask and so many other uses

• face wash, toner & moisturizer

•going “no poo” was one of the best decision I’ve ever made

• we use “>essential oils for so many things especially in the MYO products and absolutely love them!

•hand soap~ we don’t make it but found a better way to stretch our dollar

•bug spray for us and our boys, Lukey and Bear

•disinfectant spray

•better substitute for diaper cream

Here are the products that we can’t live without and they help us make the products for our personal and home use: hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, apple cider vinegar,Dr. Bronner Magic Soap, coconut oil, and essential oils.

#5. Check out Bed Bath and Beyond when you need something for your house. They do price match and take expired coupons. They also allow you to redeem more than one coupon in one transaction. We’ve been able to buy some good kitchen tools for less here than at Target.

#6. Lowe’s & Home Depot offer 10% discount for veterans and also do price match.

20141023-103457.jpg

#7. Raise.com & ebates.com

We’ve been using Raise.com a lot the last few months to buy gift cards. Every penny counts right? We’ve saved quite a bit since we only buy the gift cards for the stores that sell what we need.

Anh Mark shops at Lowe’s & Home Depot for almost everything we need for the house so I bought him this Lowe’s gift card awhile back and he doesn’t have to use it all at one time. I just didn’t wanna buy a bunch of time and then we’d have to print the vouchers bunch of time. On top of that he’d also be getting a 10% military discount so that’s another $22 saved. So we’d be saving $47! I also headed over to ebates.com before heading to raise.com to get another 1% for all our gift card purchases.

Wanna try it out? If so we hope you’ll our link
to help us some points with Raise.

So far we’ve earned $85 with ebates already! It’s an awesome way to earn more money if you love to shop online.
Please use our link to sign up

#8. So before shopping at Target, Kohl’s, Bed Bath Beyond, Home Depot, Lowe’s or anywhere else make sure you find a gift card at Raise.com first! :)

20141103-083525.jpg

#9. thredup.com ~ since I’m in between size right now and my weight is a roller coaster… I couldn’t wait any longer to fit into my “skinny pants”and can’t wear my leggings forever so thredup was a great way to shop without spending a fortune. I found some really cute pants from Banana Republic (the dress up ones) and one is brand new for less how much I used to spend for one pant at Express, Gap and Banana.

It’s an awesome site – you can buy or conveniently sell excellent-quality women’s and kids clothing. They’ve got everything from Gucci to Gap, J Crew to Justice – at up to 90% off retail prices! I can get you $10 off your first purchase with this link.

P.S. If you join through my link, I’ll get a $10 store credit. Pretty please. Thank you so much! <3

10. Used books store, Amazon, church library, local library, online yard sale groups are great places to buy used but in great condition books.

Shopping on Amazon and being a Prime member was one of the best purchase we’ve ever made. It’s help us save an incredible amount of time from not having to get a baby and now toddler ready to go the stores. The UPS is also one of my best friend now. :)

Thank you for so much for taking the time to read this post and for clicking on any of our affiliate links.

Don’t forget to join us over on facebook and check back with usfor PART TWO that will be covering SAVINGS on groceries, baby and pet products.

31 Ways We Saved Money & Time on Our Son’s First Fifteen Months

These are the 31 ways that worked and are still working for us:

1. Don’t overspend by buying a bunch of baby clothes. Check out this post here

2. Since we’d like to have three kids we try to buy as much gender neutral clothes and baby products as we can.

20140109-105431.jpg

3. We’re always grateful for still in great condition hands down baby clothes, must haves and toys.

4. We love the thrift stores! We bought this reversible Osk Kosh jacket for $5.99 and it’s still in great condition. I saw a similar coat at Kohl’s for $70.00! After a few washes Baby Turtle (BT) now has a “new” jacket. :)

20140109-105819.jpg

5. We didn’t buy our son many shoes because he was growing so fast and he didn’t really need them since we were always staying at home. But I love Zutano booties!
Zutano Newborn Baby-Girls Fleece Bootie, Fuchsia, 6 Months This link will take you to Amazon site for Zutano booties and there are four colors to choose from.

6.Don’t be tempted to buy everything even with all the great sales, promotions and coupons. I’m very careful and BRU gets me every time! That’s why I avoid it and the malls as much as possible. No need to spend more money on things we think we need :)

7. Before you purchase anything check out the reviews on Amazon. Doing this will help you family save a lot of money and helps prevent you from buying a bunch of unnecessary or not so great items

8. If you find a price you love on Amazon; don’t forget to price match it at BRU and Target. The item just need to be sold and ships from Amazon for them to match it.

9. I like BRU and unless I have an item on the list and the 20% coupon I refuse to step in there. Plus BRU only allows one 20% coupon in one transaction and it has so many exclusions.
Check out Money $aving Tips for shopping at Babies R Us

10. I absolutely Target! It’s a huge time saver and I love how we can buy everything all in one stop. Check out, Many ways to save money at Target.

11. Join Target Baby Alerts for mobile coupons for your little ones.
Also don’t forget to register your baby registry at Target. Read more about the little bag of goodies here
Target still sends us booklet of coupons for BT.

12. On top the many ways to save at Target (5% discount from Target debit/credit card, manufacturer and Target coupons, Target mobile coupons, Ibotta) make sure you take advantage of Target Cartwheel!

13. We love to take advantage of gift card promotions and sales to stock up on wipes and diapers at Target. Even though BT uses cloth diapers it’s always a good idea to have disposable diapers in stock. We don’t mind using Target’s Up & Up brand.

Here’s how we stock up on wipes for $0.01/wipe and diapers for $0.10/diaper.

14. TJ Maxx & Ross are also great places to find huge bargains on baby essentials. Check out this post here

15. Check out used book stores, library and church library for books, CDS and DVDS.

20140529-125836.jpg

Our books we borrowed from our church library.

16. Check out the used books on Amazon.

20140531-202445.jpg We bought all these books for only one penny each from Amazon and only paid $3.99 for two days shipping.

17. Don’t forget to sign up for coupons with Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Babies. Buy Buy Babies does accept competitor coupons and will also accept Bed Bath and Beyond coupons (only the in the mail ones). No expired BB&B coupons will be accepted at Buy Buy Babies. If you register with BBB for the baby registry; you’ll receive a bag of goodies!

18. Check out ebay for gently used baby items. We were able to get a few toys and even a great high chair & stroller for baby boy on eBay for a really good price.

19. Consider purchasing baby products that will grow with your child.

20. Try to buy as many gender neutral baby products not just clothes as you can especially if you’re considering having more than one child.

21. Kohl’s is a great place to shop for our baby products! :) We bought a bunch of new clothes for baby boy with the 30% coupon, $10 off $30 purchase (we were able to combine two coupons), earned $10 for $50 spent, earned 6% cash back from ebates and received free shipping.

20140304-011731.jpg

22. If you’re able to nurse; nursing has so many wonderful health benefits for Mommy & baby :) It will also help save your family a lot of money. Read more about the many benefits of breast feeding here

23. Paying $80 to be a Amazon Prime member is the best decision we’ve ever made. We absolutely love Amazon Prime. It’s helped us save so much time and money.

20140628-083945.jpg

20140628-084449.jpg

24. If you’re able to~ give cloth diaper a try! We’ve been using cloth diaper since our son was one month old and still loving it fifteen months later. Check out this post
if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed with cloth diaper altogether.

25. You don’t have to buy a baby food maker and making baby food is so easy and of course fresher. I started making baby food for our son since he was six months. When he turned nine months and he just ate what we ate. I didn’t buy any special baby food maker and just used our blender and a special pot for steaming vegetables. When our old blender died so we bought the Ninja to make baby food, and have been using it to make green smoothie almost every other day, and yummy drinks.

20140531-203316.jpg

26. I love these muslin blankets and use them all the time. If you have these awesome blankets you’d not need to buy a nursing cover/nursing scarf, car seat cover etc… Just use these!
Since they’re so light I always have one in each baby bag. It’s always good to always be prepared for anything.

27. Rotate the toys each week.
We have boxes of toys and we usually rotate them each week and share the toys with our neighbors. It’s a great to save money on not having to buy a bunch of toys. When we rotate the toys our son also thinks that he’s getting “new toys”.

20140620-152455.jpg28.
We didn’t buy a baby food maker and used a steamer and blender for making all BT’s food. We still use the blender to make green smoothie and all the yummy drinks. If we did buy
a baby food maker we wouldn’t have use it as long.

20140620-153002.jpg

29. Instead of buying a DVD player, and white noise machine we invested in a mini iPad and use it for everything. BT doesn’t watch a lot of tv but when we need to we use Amazon Prime or find something cute on YouTube to keep him occupied. This trick helped me greatly when Anh Mark wasn’t home and I didn’t have help and just needed a few minutes to prepare his meals. It also plays the audio Bible through the Bible.is app and this helps our baby boy sleeps so soundly! And of course we used it mainly for FaceTime with Daddy and BT’s grandparents when Anh Mark was away for work for many months.

30. Take advantage of stores’ gift card promotions whenever you can. We like to buy the gift cards for stores we shop at a lot and earn the $20 Catalina coupon…. Shoppers had a gift card promotion not long ago for a lot of stores and Amazon gift card was one of the participating gift cards. We took advantage of it and stock up on the gift cards and bought $200 in Amazon gift cards and earned two $20 Catalina coupons.

31. Check out raise.com for discounted gift cards. There are so many gift cards available for so many stores.

My Birthday Present this Year = My New Love :)

20140309-153206.jpg

I’m a huge fan of baby carriers and love them. The newest one I’ve added is the Boba Air Baby Carrier, Black
Why did I decide to buy the Boba Air when we already have the ERGO Baby Carrier Bundle of Joy – Original Galaxy Grey with Galaxy Grey Insert, Boba / Diaper Dude Special Edition Baby Carrier (Color: Camouflage) with **BONUS** Samples of Rockin Green Soap/Detergent and Tooth Tissues!, and Pognae Baby Carrier (Beige)?

I love the Ergo and Pognae (in the summer time) if I’m going to be carrying him for a long time and they also work great when he was younger and wasn’t as active.

Now that he’s able to sit up by himself he usually sits in the grocery cart infant seat when we’re at the store. This helps so much when I have a long list to buy and we don’t get out much anymore. But there are time when we were at the stores and he didn’t want to sit as long as I’d like him to and I needed to hold him. As much as I’d like to hold him I just couldn’t with a cart full of stuffs. I didn’t have the Ergo with me since I was hoping he’d sit in the infant seat long enough for us to shop. So holding BT and pushing a cart full of heavy items made the trip not so pleasant. From that day I was on the search for a portable, reliable and good carrier and I’ve finally found it and bought it for my birthday this year.

Now with the Boba Air I don’t have to panic when we’re at the store for not having the Ergo with me. With the Boba Air being the lightest baby carrier out there (only 0.7 lbs!) I’ll always have it with me in my diaper bag or Saving Green bag and will be able to carry BTevery time baby boy needs me to. I love how it’s so small and light and can fit into my bag. Even though it’s 100% nylon it’s constructed and deigned well and very sturdy and it doesn’t look cheap. I also love how I can just wipe it down. The Boba Air is perfect for on the go Mommies that need to make a quick trip to the store. The only downside is it’s not padded on the shoudler and waist like the Ergo so it’s not comfortable to wear for a long period of time. Great job Boba!!

I actually waited for a long time to buy the Skip Hop Moby Bathtub Elbow Rest, Blue, BRICA Bath Kneeler

because I didn’t think they are necessary. But as our sweet BT got older I finally gave in and bought them and I’m so glad I did. Our bath must haves make bath time so much more enjoyable now.

My new love, Soyajoy G4.

20131017-131054.jpg

I’m so loving the Soyajoy G4 right now! My sweet hubby bought it for me on Amazon. The soy milk is absolutely delicious and fresh. It also saves me a lot of time not having to deal washing the blender, pot, and everything else needed to make soymilk. The Soyajoy G4 does everything for me~ grind the soybeans, cook the soymilk and all I have to do is strain the cooked milk well before enjoying it. The best part is does it ALL in less than 28 minutes. I also love how it is stainless steel and makes cleaning a breeze! I also don’t have a burnt bottom like I did when I cooked it from the stove. The Soyajoy milk maker comes with a one year warrantee and included in with milk maker is a strainer, measuring cup and pitcher.
Can’t wait to start making porridge for our baby boy and homemade tofu. I promise you too will fall in love with it instantly!
